It's a new year and some exciting things are in the works. I have a new show opening this week at BQM Diner. It's a digital series featuring images inspired by old school diners. The piece above pays homage to the old Stem Diner, at Queen and Spadina, where BQM now resides.

I'm making some cards this holiday season. I hand-cut the lino snowflakes and printed each card myself, making each individual card slightly different.

They'll be great for the holidays as each card is done on acid-free stock and individual signed and numbered. With a limited run of each design, these cards can be framed as Art by the recipient!

Keep an eye out here in the next week or two. I will be providing a link for purchase to Etsy, as well as unveiling another original design!

Baby! (no, not mine...)

A friend of mine is having a baby and came up with a great idea. She handed out blank cards with self-addressed envelopes and asked that everyone write a little note or joke. The cards are going to be read to her by her partner during labour contractions.

This is the outside of the card... I jazzed it up with a rattle and diaper pin. I really like the visual play between the printed dots on the card and the hand-drawn images.

Here's a recent digital work I completed for the holidays. It's a seasonal piece that illustrates some of the fun to be had in Toronto during the coldest months of the year.

Based on some personal photos I took, I also cut out and scanned some snowflakes to punch up the detail and authentic feel. The original snowflakes are still hanging in my apartment...

This is my most recent illustration for U of T's independent newspaper, The Newspaper. You can check out the article here. It addresses Toronto Police Chief Bill Blaire's recent objective to keep many of the G20 'temporary' police cameras up in downtown Toronto.
Is pushing the idea of "Big Brother is watching" the best way to deter crime?
This past weekend a horrible crime occurred in downtown Toronto and cameras captured some of the altercation. It has been reported that a young man was run-down with a vehicle and died later in hospital after an altercation at a nightclub. In this case, cameras were able to catch some of the event, although the license plate was not captured. The footage might, however, be useful as evidence if the suspect is apprehended.
In London, England there are approximately 10 000 CCTV cameras currently installed at a cost of approximately 320 million (CDN). However, it's estimated that 80% of crime goes unsolved (read more here).
Clearly this issue is complex and not going anywhere soon. Hopefully any addition of cameras will also be coupled with addressing other issues that drive crime including mental illness, poverty, drug addiction and the loss of community, family and hope, among others.

My condolences to the family and loved ones of Vincent Dang.
